Several aspects of Research Management are unique, when compared to managing projects in more classical structured environments:
- it is usually open-ended (the end product is Knowledge, not a pre-defined tangible product),
- the Value of the results are is often difficult to judge,
- the Stakeholders are not always known upfront identified and
- planning of time and resources involves balancing an inherent level of uncertainty (risk)
Working in such an environment requires special skills and expertise beyond simple project management.
